21C Music Festival: Vox Clamantis and Maarja Nuut & HH Celebrate Estonia's Centennial

Grammy Award-winning Estonian vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis is “a rarity. The 15 singers sound is complete, comfortable possession of the music and its incantatory intentions.” (BBC Music) Ensemble members share a passion for Gregorian chant, early polyphony, and contemporary music. The duo of violinist and singer, Maarja Nuut, and Estonian electronic music composer, Hendrik Kaljujärv, are defined by a deep and intense quest to create complex moodscapes. Nuut uses her voice, violin, and loop station to create a quirky sound world that seems to be out of a Baltic fairy tale book.

Koerner Hall, TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning (273 Bloor St. West)

Spring is in the air and invites a performance of Beethoven’s "Pastoral" Symphony No. 6. Throw open your windows and take a deep breath as his music leads you into the countryside. There may be storms, but amid country folk, shepherds, and babbling streams he offers refreshment for the soul—a perfect pairing with Elisa Citterio’s much-anticipated performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, one of the world’s best-known and best-loved concertos.
