For Sama

Out of the besieged city of Aleppo comes one of the most urgent documentaries of the year. In this love letter from a young mother to her daughter, Syrian filmmaker Waad al-Kateab creates a time capsule of her war-torn hometown, capturing the beauty and chaos all around her for five years. While the battles rage on daily, her baby girl Sama is born, and Waad is faced with an impossible decision: whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. Told through tender video diaries, the SXSW and Hot Docs-lauded For Sama depicts how love can bloom in even the direst of circumstances.
