The Miles Nadal JCC and the Canadian Jewish Literary Awards proudly present: A virtual Meet the Author Event Featuring Rebecca Margolis, 2023 Canadian Jewish Literary Awards winner

Author and Yiddish scholar Rebecca Margolis discusses her recent award-winning publication Yiddish Lives On: Strategies of Language Transmission with Canadian Jewish Literary Awards Chair Edward Trapunski. Learn about Rebecca’s research, including the rise of post-war Yiddishism, its contemporary developments, and promises for the future. Co-presented by the Canadian Jewish Literary Awards. Presented in partnership with The Israel and Golda Koschitzky Centre for Jewish Studies and the Committee for Yiddish. This virtual program will be recorded.

Rebecca (Rivke) Margolis is a professor and Pratt Foundation Chair of Jewish Civilisation at the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation at Monash University. Her research focuses on Yiddish culture, notably New Yiddish Cinema. She is the author of Jewish Roots, Canadian Soil: Yiddish Culture in Montreal, 1905-1945 and Yiddish Lives On: Strategies of Language Transmission. Her current research investigates the production of twenty-first century fiction film and television with Yiddish dialogue and her book, The Yiddish Supernatural on Screen: Dybbuks, Demons and Haunted Jewish Pasts, is in press. She is currently working on a study of the trope of Yiddish as funny on American Television, with her most recent article Oy with the Poodles Already!': Yiddishisms and Non-Jewish Characters on American Sitcoms."

The Canadian Jewish Literary Awards, including the Irving Abella Award, are judged by an independent jury, who this year have selected winners in the categories of fiction, biography/memoir, poetry, history, Jewish Thought and Culture, Yiddish, scholarship, Holocaust, and books for children and youth, as well as two special awards. The Israel & Golda Koschitzky Centre for Jewish Studies at York University is Canada's first interdisciplinary research centre in Jewish Studies. It brings together a vibrant community of scholars, teachers, and advanced students to promote cutting-edge research in the field.
