Future Cities Canada // Push
Presented in partnership with Evergreen as part of Future Cities Canada.
With housing prices soaring past income levels, and families being squeezed out of cities worldwide, having a place to live is becoming more and more difficult. In this urgent and incisive Hot Docs 2019 hit, director Fredrik Gertten (Bikes vs. Cars) follows Leilani Farha, a newly appointed UN specialist from Ottawa, in her fight to define affordable housing as a fundamental human right. On her quest, she travels to some of the world's biggest cities—London, New York, Barcelona, and Toronto—to examine the scale and causes of the crisis, and confront the corporate players turning housing into a commodity that can be bought and sold.
Following the film, stay for a pre-recorded Q&A featuring director Fredrik Gertten and Leilani Farha, Global Director of The Shift and former United Nations Special Rapporteur on adequate housing. The Q&A will be moderated by Shane Smith, Hot Docs' director of programming.
