Fall Films: A Gentle Breeze in the Village
6:30 pm (doors open 6:00)
Dir. Nobuhiro Yamashita, 2007, 118 min. Free Admission (please register at the link) In Japanese with English subtitles
Based on the popular manga Tennen Kokekko, A Gentle Breeze in the Village transports us to the world of a teenage girl growing up in a small country village. Soyo is the only eighth grader at her school. In fact, her combined elementary and junior high school has only six students in all. When Hiromi arrives from Tokyo, he becomes her first classmate. But can she learn to like this handsome but rude newcomer?
Director Nobuhiro Yamashita (Linda, Linda, Linda) again demonstrates a gift for understated, observational filmmaking in this sweet but unsentimental coming-of-age story.
