Featuring an exclusive introduction by former Toronto City Planner Jennifer Keesmaat, one of Canada’s leading urban thinkers and advocates for sustainable, liveable cities.
Arguably no one did more to shape our understanding of the modern North American city than Jane Jacobs, the visionary activist and writer who fought to preserve urban communities in the face of destructive development projects. Once our neighbour in the Annex, Jacobs played an integral role in making sure Toronto looks and feels the way it does today; her successful opposition to the Spadina expressway helped ensure the city was for people first, and cars second. But before she moved to Toronto, Jacobs stood up to rapid urbanization in New York City. Citizen Jane is a timely and inspiring tale of what can happen when engaged citizens fight the power for the sake of a better world.
Jennifer Keesmaat is an urban planner passionate about creating places where people flourish. Named one of the "most powerful people in Canada" by Macleans, one of the "most influential" by Toronto Life, she spent five years as Toronto's Chief City Planner, where she was celebrated for her forward thinking and collaborative approach to city-building.
