The Mosque: A Community’s Struggle VOD // Hot Docs at Home
Expand on the critical issues raised in the film in the paired panel discussion, “The Mosque and Islamophobia,” presented by The Mosaic Institute.
As the tragedy of recent events have compelled us all to look inwards and confront the alarming escalation of Islamophobia in Canada, we look to film for an entry point for conversation. Told through a highly personal and human lens, The Mosque goes inside the small Muslim community of Québec City in the wake of the 2017 shooting that devastated their lives and families. Filmmaker Ariel Nasr (The Forbidden Reel, Hot Docs 2020) follows survivors as they navigate their place in society and fight to shift the narrative around what it means to Muslim in Canada today. How will the community heal and how will they stop the rhetoric that threatens to precipitate further violence?
After you've watched the film, join experts Jasmin Zine (Professor of Muslim Studies at Wildred Laurier University), Amira Elghawaby (journalist), Idil Issa (advocate, public speaker) and Sidrah Ahmad-Chan (Rivers of Hope Project) for a free recorded panel on breaking down divisions, healing after the Quebec City massacre on January 29, 2017, and what allyship and solidarity look like moving forward. Watch the panel.
The discussion was originally recorded on July 16, 2020 in conjunction with an earlier screening of The Mosque on Hot Docs at Home.
