A Colourful Life: The Art and Drawing of Josh Silburt

An exhibition of the political cartoons and landscape paintings of the Canadian artist Josh Silburt (1914-1991)

Silburt began his artistic training under Group of Seven member L.L. Fitzgerald at the Winnipeg School of Art in the 1930’s. His political cartoons appeared in all major Toronto newspapers in the early 1940’s. Silburt’s artistic ambition collided head on with his politics and Jewish identity throughout the upheavals of the Great Depression and WWII. After 1947, he gave up cartooning and became a prolific painter, developing his own unique style of palette knife application, capturing the beauty and ruggedness of his beloved Canada.

Ralph Wintrob will be presenting a tie-in lecture about the history of political cartooning in Canada for on Thursday September 28 at 1:30pm for an Active 55+ Culture program on that day. $5 Admission for this lecture only.
