Leonard Bernstein: "A Department Store of Music"

Fee: $175.00 3-week series It was composer Igor Stravinsky who complimented Leonard Bernstein by referring to him once as, "a department store of music." Conductor, composer of both concert music and musicals, pianist, educator, lecturer, writer, broadcaster, cultural ambassador - Bernstein had one of the most wide-ranging musical careers of all. 2018 marks the centennial of the birth of Bernstein, to be celebrated in concerts, articles, lectures, seminars, discussions and courses around the world. In these unstable and worrisome times, maybe one of Bernstein's statements best exposes his philosophy of music- "This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before!" Through recordings and film clips, featuring Bernstein in concert and rehearsal, as well as in discussion and lecture, this series will delve into the talents, skills and genius of one of the most prominent musicians of the 20th century.
