In March 2021, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he would be open to a constitutional debate about the role of the British monarchy in Canada, and made a pledge to decolonize Canadian laws and policies. At that time, an historic 45 per cent of Canadians polled said they preferred an elected head of state. Has the time come to reassess the nature of this relationship? Should Canada abolish the monarchy?
