Ageless: Freedom of Expression

Ageless International Film Festival and Hot Docs present an evening in celebration of freedom of expression.

The event opens with a screening of the short film, Codename Sally, documenting the extraordinary efforts of a handful of PEN Canada members to bring Salman Rushdie in total secrecy and under heavy security, to the stage of the Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto for the PEN Benefit thirty years ago.

Codename Sally was directed by Ari Gunnarsson, and produced by Sturla Gunnarsson, Suzanne Depoe and Grace Westcott.

Also screening will be the opening sequence to Midnight's Children. Directed by Deepa Mehta, produced by David Hamilton and Salman Rushdie. A passionate cinephile, Rushdie adapted the screenplay from his novel and served as narrator.

Following the screenings, The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, along with Louise Dennys, Ari Gunnarsson, Sturla Gunnarsson, Deepa Mehta, John Ralston Saul and Ric Young will engage in a discussion of current issues surrounding freedom of expression in Canada and abroad.
