Night three of X Avant XVII: LifeWorld brings the Ontario premiere of Bijuriya, the alter ego of Montreal’s music composer and experimental vocalist Gabriel Dharmoo, who has enlivened The Music Gallery before but never as spectacularly as this. Bijuriya explores her cultural roots by representing the diversity of South Asian female identities. Code-switching between drag performance, vocal improvisation, original songs, experimental sound design and the porosity between singing and lip-syncing, this piece celebrates the artist’s Brownness through an array of unexpected talents.
