Disability Culture Club

Join us for the first season of Disability Culture Club! Each month, we will gather online for a relaxed conversation about a subject or media text relating to disability culture. Whether you’re new to disability cultures or a cultural connoisseur looking to exchange ideas and mingle with peers - this event is for you!

This session welcomes participants of all ages! The creators of the disability justice children’s book We Move Together will be giving a presentation titled Changing the Narrative: Disability Representation in Children’s Literature. Published in spring of 2021, We Move Together is one of the first children’s picture books to explicitly engage with ableism and disability justice and to represent diverse forms of disability as desirable ways of being in the world. The book emerged out the authors’ lived experience in disability culture, community, and scholarship, as well as from their experience being parents of young children. The product of a creative, collaborative process between the authors, illustrator, and various disability communities across Turtle Island/North America, the book follows a mixed-ability group of kids as they creatively negotiate everyday barriers and find joy and connection in disability culture and community. To accompany the book, the authors also created a series of accessible reading tools (e.g., audio described and ASL interpretations of the book) and a learning guide with activities aimed to support critical conversations about disability, accessibility, community building, and disability justice in classrooms and communities. In this session, the authors of We Move Together discuss the relationship between their disability justice children’s book and disability representation in children’s literature more broadly. The authors will then do an audio described reading of their book and engage in a discussion with participants.
