UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and Hot Docs invite you to a special premiere of Bahati — a short animated documentary film about a former Rwandan refugee's journey from Kenya to Canada, narrated by Bahati herself — followed by a screening of the feature film Blind Ambition.

After the films, the audience will have the opportunity to engage with guest panelists through a Q&A discussion on forced displacement, starting over and overcoming unimaginable circumstances.

Panelists include:

  • Bahati Ernestine Maganjo | Nurse and RefugePoint economic mobility consultant
  • Rema Jamous Imseis | UNHCR Representative in Canada
  • Harun Tuna and Leila Shifteh | Directors, Fake Honey Pictures

Bahati (d. Leila Shifteh, Harun Yasin Tuna | 11 mins) A short animated documentary film about a former refugee's journey. The film illustrates the resilience and strength of a young woman in the face of many unknowns.

Blind Ambition (d: Robert Coe and Warwick Ross | 96 min) Blind Ambition follows four friends who have beaten the odds to become South Africa's top sommeliers after escaping starvation and tyranny in their homeland of Zimbabwe. Driven by relentless optimism, a passion for their craft and a sense of national pride, they form Zimbabwe's first national wine tasting team and set their sights on winning the coveted top spot at the World Blind Wine Tasting Championships—the Olympics of wine tasting, held annually in France. This is a feel-good underdog story that draws inevitable comparisons to Cool Runnings; the friendly banter and easy camaraderie among the Zimbabwean team is a joy to watch. You don’t have to be a wine connoisseur to appreciate Blind Ambition’s uplifting message and playful charm.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, protects people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. We work in over 130 countries, protecting millions of people by responding with life-saving support, safeguarding fundamental human rights and helping them build a better future.
