The Dark Side of Oz
Innocuous coincidence or occult synchronicity? There are just too many perfectly-aligned moments to write it off as simply being the product of the overactive minds of bored teenagers looking for the next experience to trip out over.
The stoner-fueled phenomenon of The Dark Side of Oz, or The Dark Side of the Rainbow as it is also called, pairs the 1973 Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon with a screening of The Wizard of Oz. This pairing emerged as a rumour emanating from the shag-carpeted basements of Pink Floyd fans and was picked up and rapidly propagated in the early days of internet fan message boards, despite numerous denials of intent on the part of the band.
The phenomenon quickly evolved from the precise pairing of a needle drop and press of play on the VCR remote to a one-of-a-kind Midnight Movie experience—enjoyed by many curious purveyors of the strange and esoteric at the old Bloor Cinema—that has only since helped to grow the myth behind this mystical pairing.
