Yiddish Concert and Café featuring Theresa Tova and David Warrack Co-presented by the Committee for Yiddish Join us in the Al Green Theatre for an afternoon of music and Mameloshn! An homage to the great European Yiddish cafes and coffeehouses, this in-person event will feature a Yiddish concert performed Theresa Tova - Canada's reigning diva of Yiddish song - and award-wining musician David Warrack. Enjoy Second Avenue, Broadway and Great American Songbook classics, jazzy Yiddish standards, and… a few surprises! We will also have a Yiddish open-mic portion, for those wishing to read poetry, prose or perform an acapella song. Sweet kosher treats will be served. Thursday September 19 Concert: 1:30-3:30pm Dessert reception: 3:30-4:30pm Al Green Theatre Admission: $8.00 Theresa Tova has performed to multicultural crowds at concerts in Toronto, Montreal, Paris, New York, San Francisco, and Luxembourg. She has headlined major festivals such as Amsterdam’s Jewish Music Festival, Warsaw’s Bashevis Singer Festival and Buenos Aires Yiddish Festival. Tova starred as Emma Goldman in the First National Broadway tour of Ragtime, Yenta in Fiddler On The Roof and Lady Jane in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience at the Stratford Festival. Tova wrote and starred in Still the Night, which won four Dora Awards including Best Production, Best Musical and Best New Play and was short-listed for the Governor General Award for Excellence in dramatic literature. Theresa has also recorded three acclaimed CDs, leading Planet Jazz to call her a “towering, pan-cultural jazz-cabaret diva”. Theresa has a long history of performing at our JCC, including at Stars on Spadina, and we are delighted to welcome her back to our building this fall! David Warrack has a varied career as a Composer, Conductor, Pianist, Vocalist, Lyricist, Librettist, Arranger, Orchestrator, Music Director, Director, Satirist, Comedian, Actor, Poet, Producer, Impresario, Bon Vivant, and Hockey Coach, he has truly done it all! As a writer he has had 66 shows produced professionally and he has been Musical Director for over two hundred productions across North America, including Shenandoah starring John Cullum on Broadway. He won a Dora Mavor Moore Award in Toronto for his production of Toronto, Toronto and for outstanding Music Direction on the production of Closer Than Ever. At our JCC, David accompanied The Ault Sisters at our 2020 Valentine’s Day jazz concert “When I Fall In Love”, and we are very happy to welcome him back this fall!
