The Blair Witch Project
Inspired by the style and technique of documentary, The Blair Witch Project employs found video footage to tell the tale of three film students (Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams) who travel to a small town to document the Blair Witch, a legendary local murderer. Over the course of several days, the students interview townspeople and gather clues to support the veracity of the legend. The project takes a frightening turn when the students lose their way in the woods and begin hearing horrific noises.
The documentary stylings and viral marketing campaign that including missing person fliers for the film students and a website of so-called evidence of the Blair Witch made this indie horror a box office hit and paved the way for the found-footage genre.
