Kandukondain Kandukondain
A Year of Austen: In celebration of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday, this monthly screening series of beloved Austen adaptations showcases the author’s enduring hold on literature, the romance genre and pop culture.
This Tamil-language, musical adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen’s first published novel, follows a single mother and her daughters after they lose their country estate. Sowmya (Tabu) and Meenakshi (Aishwarya Rai) are of marriageable age, but Sowmya is branded as unlucky after her fiancé commits suicide. Meenakshi, however, appears to find love in the form of a poetry-loving businessman. Still, many hurdles remain as both women struggle—each to find the right man and both to keep the family's finances in order.
Although it bears little apparent resemblance to its source material—it trades 18th-century Devonshire for contemporary South India and adds a few musical numbers—Kandukondain Kandukondain maintains the core of Austen’s work in the nuances of the characters and their relationships. A testament to Austen’s ability to craft stories that resonate not only through time but also across different cultures and languages.
In Tamil with English subtitles.
