Ghosts of the Sea
One of the most talked about Canadian films at Hot Docs 2025 returns for its Toronto theatrical premiere.
Until the age of two, Virginia Tangvald lived an unconventional life, sailing the world with her mother, her brother Thomas, and their renowned sailor father, the Norwegian adventurer Peter Tangvald. Years after her father’s death, now a mother herself, Tangvald pieces together the fragments of her family’s story and uncovers a chilling series of events, through which she confronts her now-infamous father’s complex legacy. Haunted by his story and the mysterious death of her beloved brother Thomas, she revisits family friends and an extensive family archive to connect the dots. As the film’s prologue states, Aristotle once said: “There are three kinds of people: the living, the dead and those who go to sea.” Tangvald embraces this sentiment and stylistically infuses her film with an air of the in-between, as her dreamy, melancholic voice leads us through this dark family tale. - Aisha Jamal, Hot Docs
