She's the Man
Shakespeare, Sorta: True to the Bard’s legacy of theatre for the masses, these iconic adaptations with 90s heart throbs, senior proms, and pop soundtracks are the prefect way to ring in the new school year.
In this adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, Viola Hastings (Amanda Bynes) is devastated after her school cuts the girls soccer program and won't let her try out for the boys team. When her twin brother Sebastian takes off for London, Viola decides to disguise herself as Sebastian, take his place at rival school Illyria, and try out for Illyria’s soccer team. She soon falls for her roommate Duke (Channing Tatum), who’s in love with their classmate Olivia (Laura Ramsey). Olivia, on the other hand, is more interested in Viola disguised as Sebastian. It’s a love triangle for the ages, and while Shakespeare’s original certainly did not feature soccer motifs or lessons in Gouda-based flirting, this teen adaptation is true to the Bard in its tangled web of lovers, humour, and exploration of gender.
