But I'm a Cheerleader
Pride Projected: Celebrate Pride with must-see documentaries, special events and screenings!
Seventeen-year-old Megan (Natasha Lyonne) loves cheerleading. She also loves her football-player boyfriend—but doesn’t love kissing him. Paired with her vegetarianism and love of Melissa Etheridge, Megan’s family and friends suspect she’s a lesbian in need of conversion camp. Despite her insistence that she’s heterosexual, Megan is sent to conversion camp, True Directions. Alongside other teens who are trying to cure themselves of homosexuality by practising traditional gendered activities, Megan meets Graham Eaton (Clea DuVall). Suddenly, it’s hard to think straight.
Comedic, bursting with candy colour, and featuring a hilarious turn by an out-of-drag RuPaul, But I'm a Cheerleader takes themes of shame, rejection and self-acceptance, and weaves them into delightful satire and a tender sapphic romance. The perfect queer comfort film to celebrate Pride.
